Knockdown (KD) steel door frames are made for installation in existing drywall or blockwall openings. A KD steel door frame has interlocking tabs and slots. The frames have visible seams when installation is finished. KD frames are the most affordable because they ship in pieces and require assembly upon arrival at the worksite.

Welded commercial metal door frames are best suited for new construction sites. They're chosen for their seamless appearance and to help ensure that the door frames are square when they're installed. A welded hollow metal door frame is suitable for use in drywall and blockwall openings. They are a bit more expensive because they arrive preassembled and don't require welding or finishing.
