Warehouses: Choosing The Right Doors

02/16/21
by Wayne Foreman

Choosing the right doors for your warehouses can make a world of difference to your business’ productivity and security. The right warehouse door will open easily, yet remain secure when the warehouse is closed. All in all, there’s a lot to consider when you’re in the market for a new warehouse door.

In today’s post, we’re going to go over the most important factors you should consider when it’s time to buy a new door or your warehouse, including foot traffic, safety, and measurements.

Consider Daily Warehouse Door Traffic

The amount of foot traffic in the door area will help you to determine if the opening and the closing mechanism needs to be easy to use. Many warehouse doors are opened at the start of the day and don’t close until the warehouse closes for the day. However, other warehouse doors will open and close 50 to 100 times per day or more.

If you’re going to have a door that will be open more often than not, you likely don’t care too much about how easy it is to open. Open the door once, close it once, and you’re done. However, if you’re going to be opening and closing the door throughout the day, your door’s ease of use will have a direct impact on productivity.

Any doors in high traffic areas of the warehouse, like office spaces and break rooms, need to be lighter and easier to use. A quality commercial wood door would work well under these conditions.

Make Warehouse Door Safety a Priority

Productivity is important, but nothing is more important than safety. You don’t want to have injured workers or clients. Warehouse doors absolutely must have adequate opening and closing mechanisms. If the door has a lifting mechanism, it should also have brakes to make sure that everyone using the door is kept safe.

Of course, the door can only do so much. Make sure that anyone who will be using the door regularly has proper training on opening and closing techniques, especially for doors that are designed to be lifted.

Accurately Measure the Door For Your Warehouse

This part is straightforward but is vitally important. If you’re ordering a warehouse door, you need to measure every dimension carefully. Measure it more than once. Compare your measurements to the door that you’re ordering and make sure you’re measuring from the right points. The last thing you want is a door that won’t fit in the doorway.

You might even want to contact the vendor before making your purchase to ensure that you’re measuring the right parts of the doorway for the parts that you’re ordering.

You’ll also want to consider the type of wall in which the door is being installed. Frames for installation into block walls are very different from frames designed for drywall, for instance.

Match Your Door To Your Wearhouse Needs

Not all doors are the same. You’ll need to consider the needs of your warehouse as you choose a door. If your warehouse stores food or other items that may become contaminated, you need a door that’s going to be completely sealed when closed. If you’re storing valuable goods, then you absolutely need a door that will stay secure.

The right door will match the primary purpose of the warehouse, such as keeping products cool or securing high-value assets.

Consider Weather and Warehouse Location

Any outward-facing doors have additional factors that you should consider. If you’re located in a busy industrial district or near a residential zone, you may want to keep out the noise of industrial machines or busy roadways. Having a well-insulated warehouse door can help keep this noise on the outside.

You should also consider the difference in temperature between the warehouse and the outside world. Certain kinds of doors have heavier insulation qualities than others, which can provide extra protection in cold, icy winters or hot, humid summers.

Keep Door Accessibility in Mind

Consider the loads that are likely going to be carried through your warehouse. Features like push bars and kick plates ensure hands-free door operation without damage when hands are full.
